PEMBROKESHIRE COUNTY SHOW
15th, 16th & 17th August 2017
President's Chosen Charity 2017
Sepsis survivor Richard Cole will be helping to raise awareness of the condition - and vital charity funds - during his year as Pembrokeshire County Show President.
The UK Sepsis Trust (UKST) is Mr Cole's chosen charity and his first fundraising event will be the President's Quiz at the County Showground Pavilion, Haverfordwest, on April 13.
Following his life-threatening case of sepsis in December 2015, Mr Cole is keen to raise awareness of the condition which affects 150,000 people in the UK every year and results in 44,000 deaths.
Mr Cole said: "From my personal experience I don't wish anyone else to go through what I did, or to die from sepsis when early diagnosis and treatment can do so much. "It is frightening how quickly it can happen and how long recovery can take. "It's also shocking just how many people if affects and how many people die."
UKST executive director for Wales, Terence Canning visited Mr Cole on his dairy farm near Whitland to help launch the President's fundraising year. Mr Canning said: "This will be fantastic for us. It is massively important to raise awareness of sepsis, especially in rural areas. Recognising the symptoms and early treatment are so important. "We are very grateful that Richard is using his personal experience in a positive way."
Mr Cole's wife Ann, a senior nurse, added: "If we can help people to recognise the symptoms and help to save lives, it would be amazing. We will be doing everything we can to raise funds and awareness during the year."
The President's Quiz starts at 7.30pm on Thursday, April 13. The bar will be open from 6.30pm. Teams of four are invited to take part. Entry fee is £10 per team in advance, or £12 on the night. To book your place, call the show office on 01437 764331.
The winning team will be given £100 to donate to a charity of their choice.
